| Pocket
PCs have been around for a while, but the latest mobile phones
allow everyone to benefit from mobile computing.
Many
people only use laptop computers for a few applications - email,
expenses, time sheets, etc. For these types of application, there
is no need to use bulky laptop computers, a pocket sized one will
do just as well.
Although
having some limitations (e.g. smaller screens and keyboards),
mobile phones and computers offer the big advantage of being
portable enough to carry all the time. Increasingly, companies
are replacing laptop computers with smaller mobile solutions
- providing a better service to their employees.
Business
applications transferred to pocket mobile devices will normally
use Internet applications, to provide the same features
in a smaller size screen, and use quick input facilities
like drop-down lists and touch screens. However, the older
technologies - SMS and WAP - also offer unique advantages.
Igris can develop applications for all types of mobile technology.
The advantages of each type are summarised below: -
- WAP can be viewed on cheap
phones and so can reach the widest audience. It is ideal
for 'list data' like timetables, menus, parts lists, etc.
and for textual data like news reports, bulletins, etc.
- SMS is good for small amounts
of urgent data like fault alerts.
- Internet is useful for marketing
applications that need flashy presentation. There is no
software loaded to the mobile device, so this technology
is also suited to ad-hoc public use.
Most phones have Internet browsers now.
